Back to School: Don’t Forget to Look After Yourself Too
September has a habit of arriving with all the subtlety of a school bell. One minute, summer is ticking along; the next, there are earlier alarms, packed diaries, missing water bottles and a mission to get everybody—and everything—out of the door.
The new term affects more than pupils. Parents and carers may be reorganising routines, teachers and school staff are preparing for busy days, students are settling into new timetables, and others may simply notice that everyday life has changed pace. However September looks for you, settling into a different rhythm can take time.
Why changing routines can feel demanding
A change of routine can mean longer periods driving, working at a desk or looking at a screen. There may be bags, books or equipment to carry, along with remembering where everybody needs to be—and when.
When time feels limited, rest, movement and the things that help us unwind can slip down the list. Some people feel tired, unsettled or generally wound up. Others become more aware of everyday muscle tension, particularly around their shoulders, neck or back.
There is no single “normal” response. What feels manageable for one person may feel very different for another.
Making space to slow down
Massage cannot remove the school run, complete the homework or locate the PE kit that was definitely here yesterday. It may, however, offer time away from the to-do list.
A massage session may support relaxation, comfort and general wellbeing. Some people find that a tailored treatment helps them become more aware of where they are holding everyday tension and gives them an opportunity to slow down.
We do not diagnose conditions or promise that massage will fix every ache or difficulty. We listen to what has brought you to us, discuss what you hope to gain and adapt the session to suit you.
What to expect from your appointment
Before treatment, we will discuss how you are feeling, your health information and any areas you would like us to focus on—or avoid.
You are always in control. You can request lighter or firmer pressure, change position, ask questions, or tell us if something feels unexpectedly tender or uncomfortable. You can chat or enjoy a quieter treatment. You can also ask us to pause, change or stop at any point.
There is no judgement and no expectation that every client wants the same thing. Everybody matters. Every body matters.
Small ways to support yourself
Self-care does not need to become another job. You might choose to:
Prepare one or two things the night before to make the morning gentler.
Take a brief movement break after sitting or using a screen.
Check whether bags feel comfortable and contain only what is needed.
Keep a drink nearby during busy days.
Protect a few minutes for fresh air, music, reading or quiet breathing.
Return gradually to a regular bedtime and waking routine.
The NHS advises that broadly consistent sleep and waking times, with time to relax before bed, may support better sleep. Small changes are enough; there is no prize for completing the whole list before breakfast. NHS Every Mind Matters
A quick safety note
Massage is not suitable for everybody in every circumstance. Please tell us about relevant health conditions, injuries, new symptoms, medication, pregnancy or recent medical care before your appointment. This helps us decide whether treatment is appropriate and what adaptations may be needed. NHS complementary-therapy guidance
Seek appropriate healthcare advice for new, severe, worsening, unexplained or worrying symptoms. Massage should not delay medical advice or replace care recommended by your healthcare team.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be in pain to book?
No. People book for relaxation, general wellbeing and support with everyday muscle tension. We will discuss what you want from your session before beginning.
Can I ask for a quiet treatment?
Absolutely. Some clients enjoy chatting, while others prefer quiet. Both are welcome, and you can change your mind.
What if I am unsure whether massage is suitable?
Contact us before booking. We can discuss your circumstances and, where appropriate, suggest seeking medical advice first.
A little time for you
A new term can bring opportunity, excitement and a fair amount of diary juggling. As routines change, do not forget to make a little time for yourself too.
